For me, the best music weaves itself from a tandem poignancy of meaningful lyrics and expressive instrumentation. Quite often, I find the songs I respond to viscerally have this in common – and the most intelligent tracks paint a picture of pure character; even if they don’t tell a narrative story, their depth and breadth come from the mood they evoke.
INTENT:OUTTAKE’s darkly gorgeous “Der Letzte Tanz” (in English, “The Last Dance”) is a song with which I have been slowly acquainting myself, sinking into its melancholy throb and surging sadness to relish the sympathetic salve of its despair. It tells its story with an arrhythmic heartbeat, an appeal for a frozen soul’s final dance before oblivion. While the full effect of the song is best achieved by understanding the German-language lyrics, it is not necessary in order to grasp the emotions present here – its weighted melancholy is present throughout, in heartfelt gloom which is genuinely haunting. As the words explore a loss of self, the viscosity of the melody underneath grounds its bleakness in something truly sweet – its greatest strength lies within its honesty, and therein lies its identity. Love and loss are tied together in what amounts to a strange, yet somehow stately, dance – a dance it invites the heart to lead.
Lyrics
