oday may be the birthday of Cold Cave frontman Wesley Eisold, but we are the ones getting the gift. As the band embarks on their 2019 tour, they released a new single called Promised Land. The timing is perfect because this is definitely one of those songs that you can’t wait to hear live. It’s a dark, romantic track that would do well in any dark wave / post punk club scene.
A genuine treat for Valentine’s Day: Vancouver post-punk band ACTORS has gifted us all with a cover of The Sound’s “Mining For Heart” (1985) just this morning, swiveling from the shining nostalgic brightness of their 2018 full-length release ‘It Will Come To You’ into a sound straddling grit without resorting to harshness. Jason Corbett’s vocals imbue the song with a strange warmth that is signature ACTORS; the definitive bassline, too, carries Jahmeel Russell’s hallmark sound and is borne gracefully by Corbett’s guitar and Shannon Hemmett’s subdued, moody synths.
The English synth-pop duo, Pet Shop Boys, will be releasing a song a day this week, leading up to their new EP called Annually. Annually will be a 64 page hard covered book which will feature behind the scenes footage, interviews, photography plus answers to personal letters from fans.
Spotify has introduced a new featured called “Discover Weekly” that is aimed at providing you with a weekly mixtape of music based on your music preferences. You will find the appropriately named playlist “Discover Weekly” at the top of your playlist hierarchy. My initial impression of this feature is very positive. Spotify release 1.0.9 continues in it’s attempt to make the product more usable. They are succeeding in adding in little niceties here and there, but at the same time have not offered anything truly innovative in a while. This release adds some aesthetic and usability features, but hasn’t put a huge dent in the list of features that the user base has been clamoring for.
