Well, now this is a surprise! Beach House, known for it’s dreamy, languid tunes apparently picked up some feedback pedals at the flea market. Their new single, Sparks, opens with some MBV-esque distortion before a squelch of guitar that wouldn’t be out of place on Smashing Pumpkins’ debut LP, Gish.
When the dust settles, and Victoria Legrand’s lush vocals roll in, I am reminded even more of My Bloody Valentine, ala Belinda Butcher.
This is a lovely tune, but I am curious to see what the entire Depression Cherry LP will sound like on August 28. Is this the new direction of Beach House?
Lyrics
We drive around this town
Houses melting down
A vision turning green
Is all we’ve ever seenAnd then it’s dark again
A new development
wishing that it meant
something natural
Don’t we know it’s cruelAnd it goes dark again
Just like a sparkHallucination comes
Think of everyone
That never shared before
From my mouth to yoursAnd then it’s dark again
Just like a spark
And then it vanishes
No one around
And then it comes again
Just like a spark
And then we’re vanishing
No one around
And then it comes again
Just like a sparkYou go to school
You follow all the rules
You live inside
Realize
there’s something in your eyes
You’re back again
From the spine rising through the mind
You give it up
It’s a gift
taken from the lips
You live againMake it
Wave it
AliveMake it
Wave it
Alive
