Did you know that…Blue Monday by New Order is the highest selling 12″ record of all time? Even more interesting is that due to an overly expensive sleeve designed to look like a floppy disc, New Order actually lost money on each sale of the record!

Last year, we wrote an article about collaborations with New Order singer Bernard Sumner. Since then, we have learned of a few more collaborations along with several guest appearances from Peter Hook. We thought it would be fun to put all of these projects together in a mix.
This hour long mix includes bands that Bernard and Peter were members of, such as Electronic, Bad Lieutenant, Revenge and Monaco. It also features guest appearances from the lads with bands such as 808 State, Crystal Method, Hot Chip, and many others. Continue reading →

The post-punk/new wave band from Edmonton, Cygnets, has quickly become one of the more popular new bands to hit our airwaves. The single “Leave The Prophets Dead Where They Lie” has appeared in several of our year end countdowns, and several other tracks have been in frequent rotation. The thing that makes Cygnets different from most other bands is their 100% free distribution model. Every single track by the band is available as a free download at their website – CygnetsNotSwans.
In late 2010, the band performed a set of New Order songs at the Starlite Room’s Bands As Bands show. They recently took the recordings from those shows and mixed together their versions of “Blue Monday”, “Tempation”, “Age Of Consent” and “Bizarre Love Triangle”. As usual, these songs are available as a free download on their website.

As our friends at Slicing Up Eyeballs report, Johnny Marr is set to hit the road in support of his solo debut, The Messenger. The former Smiths bassist hasn’t exactly been idle over the years, playing with his bands The Healers and the Cribs as well as Electronic, The The, Modest Mouse and The Pretenders.

While New Order tours and promotes the new Lost Sirens LP without Peter Hook, the legendary bassist surely isn’t idle himself. Currently on the road on a book tour, promoting his Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division, Hooky has announced a series of live European dates with his band The Light.
The shows will be live performances of the Unknown Pleasures LP, while the Warsaw date with include both Unknown Pleasures and Closer!

In one of our most recent Alternative Timelines Features, we posted several Timeline images of Joy Division. One of these was the cover for the LP, Unknown Pleasures. Amongst the great feedback were several comments calling it one of the greatest album covers of all time.
It is without argument an iconic cover and therefore used in lots of merchandise. Over the last few days, we have stumbled across Unknown Pleasures coffee mugs and even a dress in addition to Peter Hook’s new book, Unknown Pleasure – Inside Joy Division! So, we did a little investigation to see what else was out there outside of T-shirts.

As we await the US release of Peter Hook’s Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division (due Jan 29) and New Order frontman Bernard Sumner tours with a ‘Hook-less’ New Order, there is, as Ian Curtis once sang, “No Love Lost” between the two.
The two are in the midst of quite a rift. Hook will have his say in his new book, but Sumner recently took a moment to let his feelings on the matter be known in a frank interview with Spinner. Sumner took umbrage to Hook’s assertion that he “was determined to fuck New Order over in any possible way.” Sumner had several revealing comments in response to Hook’s criticism.

It’s been an amazing last few months or so with unexpected new music and/or tours from New Order, Depeche Mode, New Order, David Bowie, Suede, Pulp and more. While we once again were denied a reunion of The Smiths (they turned down yet another overture from Coachella), today brings another surprise.
The Postal Service, an Indietronic duo comprised of Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (DNTEL, Headset) took the Indie world by storm in 2003 with their LP, Give Up. Infectious pop from top to bottom, the quirk was that Tamborello recorded instrumental tracks and sent them to Gibbard who recorded vocals and sent them back all through the US Postal Service. One of the earliest leaders of Post-Punk, Section 25 made their Factory Records debut in 1980 with the single Girls Don’t Count, produced by Ian Curtis and Joy Division/New Order manager Rob Gretton. They had their biggest hit in 1984 when they turned to a more Synthpop sound with the inclusion of Angela and Jennifer Cassidy on the Bernard Sumner produced Looking From A Hilltop released on the From The Hip LP.
Led by Larry Cassidy and his wife Jenny, along with his brother Vin and Joanna Cassidy. The band soldiered on past the death of Jenny in 2004 and leader Larry in 2010. In 2011, with the inclusion of Larry and Jenny’s daughter Bethany on vocals, Section 25 released the download only Invicta EP, featuring the sublime single Colour, Movement, Sex & Violence which graced several Strangeways Best of 2011 lists.

2013 has started off in a ridiculously amazing fashion. In it’s first month we have been treated with music from David Bowie, Suede, Pulp and New Order. Combine that with the new Depeche Mode song leaked late last year, and this has been one of the most impressive periods of music in recent memory. Let’s review some of the goodies that we have been blessed with so.

Santa’s got a brand new bookbag…and it’s filled with wonderment from the magical land of Manchester. As we profiled earlier, there are tons of great books about beats out there. A recent entry includes a memoir, In The Pleasure Groove, from Duran Duran’s John Taylor. This Christmas, however, you may want to ask Santa for new books about The Smiths and Joy Division! According to frontman, Bernard Sumner, New Order is planning a new “electronic synth” album for early next year. Of course, the band will carry on without original bassist Peter Hook.
The plan was for New Order to start creating new material this year, but instead they have been on tour. Next year the plan for New Order is to create more music, and have less tours.
