Record Store Day Feature

Record Store Day 2012 offers releases from The Cure, Garbage, The Cult, David Bowie, M83, School Of Seven Bells and more!

Spring is in the air and it’s almost time for a National Holiday for music lovers around the world. Record Store Day is April 21, 2012. This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Record Store Day is celebrated the third Saturday every April.

A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a retailer whose main primary business focuses on a physical store location, whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths).

Some of the highlights this year include Soundtracks to Pretty In Pink, The Breakfast Club and Empire Records, School of Seven Bells covering Siouxsie & The Banshees, reissues from Bowie, The Cure, The Clash, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, brand new tracks from Garbage, Gorillaz, The Cult and Coldpay and many other treats.

I Break Horses teams up with CSLSX on new single Violent Sea; tour with M83

The Swedish duo of Maria Lindén and Fredrik Balck, otherwise known as I Break Horses, have teamed up Philadelphia musicians CSLSX for a new single and video – Violent Sea. I Break Horses came on to the scene in the summer of 2011 with their debut album Hearts and since then they have become a fan favorite on Strangeways Radio.

Violent Sea has a synthy-chill-atmospheric sound reminiscent of the music of M83. Coincidentally, I Break Horses is getting ready to hit the road as the opening act for M83. You will definitely want to catch this show if it is in a city near you!

Zola Jesus

Zola Jesus: Strangies Love, European Tour and M83 Appearance

When Strangeways Radio first launched a little more than a year ago, we asked our listeners which artists they would like to see added to the station library. Zola Jesus was the first, and most predominantly mentioned artist. Our listeners are very smart. Since then, Zola Jesus has released a few EP’s and a full length album Conatus. Zola Jesus continues to be one of the most well-received artists that we play on the station.

Zola Jesus is the work of Russian American singer/songwriter Nika Roza Danilova whose stage name combines Jesus Christ with French writer Emile Zola in a conscious attempt to alienate peers. She has just completed a US tour and is busy touring Europe for the remainder of the year.
