Last year, we wrote an article about collaborations with New Order singer Bernard Sumner. Since then, we have learned of a few more collaborations along with several guest appearances from Peter Hook. We thought it would be fun to put all of these projects together in a mix.
This hour long mix includes bands that Bernard and Peter were members of, such as Electronic, Bad Lieutenant, Revenge and Monaco. It also features guest appearances from the lads with bands such as 808 State, Crystal Method, Hot Chip, and many others. Continue reading →

In one of our most recent Alternative Timelines Features, we posted several Timeline images of Joy Division. One of these was the cover for the LP, Unknown Pleasures. Amongst the great feedback were several comments calling it one of the greatest album covers of all time.
It is without argument an iconic cover and therefore used in lots of merchandise. Over the last few days, we have stumbled across Unknown Pleasures coffee mugs and even a dress in addition to Peter Hook’s new book, Unknown Pleasure – Inside Joy Division! So, we did a little investigation to see what else was out there outside of T-shirts.

As we await the US release of Peter Hook’s Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division (due Jan 29) and New Order frontman Bernard Sumner tours with a ‘Hook-less’ New Order, there is, as Ian Curtis once sang, “No Love Lost” between the two.
The two are in the midst of quite a rift. Hook will have his say in his new book, but Sumner recently took a moment to let his feelings on the matter be known in a frank interview with Spinner. Sumner took umbrage to Hook’s assertion that he “was determined to fuck New Order over in any possible way.” Sumner had several revealing comments in response to Hook’s criticism.

If we asked you to name the single biggest killer of men under 35 in the UK what would you say? Cancer? Heart Attack? Car Accidents? Unfortunately, the answer is suicide.
CALM (the Campaign Against Living Miserably) is a registered UK charity which aims to reduce the suicide rate and provide support for those suffering from mental illness or depression. CALM promotes and delivers a free, confidential, anonymous helpline [0800 585858] which is open 5pm-midnight on Sat, Sun, Mon and Tues. However, the need is so great that CALM is seeking to run their national freephone helpline & text messaging service 7 nights a week. Here is where you come in!
To raise funds for the helpline, some of Manchester’s brightest bands have put together a compilation album called Thirty One. The album features rare and exclusive tracks from Bad Lieutenant (featuring Bernard Sumner, Stephens Morris and Phil Cunningham of New Order as well as appearances from Blur bassist Alex James), Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Elbow, The Whip, I Am Kloot, Durutti Column, D/R/U/G/S, Delphic, Airship and many more. All profits from the release will go to CALM (the Campaign Against Living Miserably). http://www.thecalmzone.net/ with £7 from every £10 album sold funding the helpline.

Factory Records, best known as the home of Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays, has also featured some lesser known artists deserving of a second listen. One of those bands is A Certain Ratio. ACR was a post-punk band from England, signed to Factory in 1979. They toured in support of Joy Division, the Talking Heads and New Order, but never reached the same level of popularity (although they can be seen featured in the movie 24 Hour Party People). 30 years later ACR have reunited and started playing festivals and one off dates in the UK.
