DIIV

DIIV perform on Letterman (with Video!); announce double show in NYC

It’s always a pleasure to see one of our favorite new bands perform on late night television. Even better when it’s a band you don’t see many live videos of. We were satisfied on both fronts last night when Brooklyn’s DIIV performed last night on the Late Show with David Letterman.

DIIV’s debut record Oshin (Captured Tracks) is dotting many Best of 2012 lists including Stangeways DJs, listeners and critics.

As Heard on TV

Catch up on tunes featured on this week’s TV shows with TV Jukebox

Remember when there were channels on TV that showed music videos? Today, Cable and Network shows are the place you can hear great cutting edge tunes, but often without so much as a hint as to what you are hearing. You could grab your phone and Shazam or Soundhoud your brains out, but Entertainment Weekly has gone one step further. Each Saturday, they publish their TV Jukebox; a look back at what songs were featured in shows throughout the week.

Over the past couple of weeks tracks from artists like The Swell Season, Muse, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric, Massive Attack, Django Django, UNKLE, The Naked and Famous, Young Magic, Iggy Pop and Perfume Genius have been featured on Network and Cable shows.

Pulp

Pulp play Fallon (updated with Video!) , stream new documentary The Beat Is The Law

2012 is shaping up to be quite a year for Sheffield’s Pulp. Fresh off their 2011 Reunion tour, Pulp is still making major headlines. The band is scheduled to perform live on Jimmy Fallon, tonight (April 9) as precursor to their pair of sold out shows in NYC. The Radio City Music Hall dates on Tuesday April 10 (with support from Chromatics!) and Wednesday April 11 mark the first tour dates in more than a decade! They will also make a stop at San Francisco’s The Warfield in between their 2 Coachella performances.

Pulp can also been seen streaming on your computer or phone in The Beat Is the Law: Fanfare for the Common People. The film is a follow up to Eve Wood’s Made in Sheffield, which profiled bands like ABC, The Human League, Heaven 17 and Pulp (in their infancy). The Beat Is The Law is a history of the amazing Sheffield music scene, from early 80′s post-punk through the globe-conquering house boom and into Britpop. With Pulp as the through-line, the film also delves into the political and economic realities underlying the music, culminating with Pulp’s underdog triumph at the 1995 Glastonbury Festival.

Made with the full co-operation of the band, ‘The Beat Is The Law – Fanfare For The Common People‘ brings together original interviews, performances, promos, newly unearthed live footage and home videos with a great soundtrack. Featuring original interviews with Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, Russell Senior, Candida Doyle and Nick Banks plus Richard Hawley (Longpigs), Mark Brydon (Chakk/FON/Moloko), Rob Gordon (FON/WARP Records), Adi Newton (ClockDVA) and many more, this Pulp film is a deep-fried feature documentary from the creators of the acclaimed ‘Made in Sheffield’.
