Strangeways Vault: The Smiths – Reel Around The Fountain, live from The Hacienda

Strangeways has opened its vault to take a look at one of the first songs released by The Smiths. Reel Around The Fountain is the first track on The Smiths debut self-titled album and to this day still remains a favorite of many fans.

Like most things Morrissey related, this song comes with lots of discussion and controversy. The songs opens up with the line It’s Time The Tale Were Told, and by the songs end you will inevitably find yourself wondering what it’s all about, and then you may come to realize that the tale has still not been told.

Before Cars – The “Birth” Of Gary Numan

In honor of the 54th birthday of one of the most notable pioneers of electronic music, we take a brief look at his birth. We don’t mean his actual birth as we’re sure he came into the world like the rest of us. We’ll take a look at his musical birth. Perhaps popular culture knows him best for “Cars” which appears on just about any “Best Of The 80s” compilation you can find, but there was a lot that happened before “Cars” was a huge success.. let’s explore…

Strangeways Vault: The Blonde Movement – The Primitives, The Darling Buds, The Heart Throbs and Voice Of The Beehive

Ahhh…the early 90′s, the heyday of Girl-fronted Guitar pop. Remember those days of bands like Belly, Throwing Muses, The Breeders, Liz Phair, Juliana Hatfield, The Sundays, Lush and Echobelly? Strangeways Vault: Berlin – Masquerade plus Terri Nunn’s Star Wars Audition

When someone mentions Terri Nunn of Berlin most fans of the 80s new wave band immediately picture the singers trademark two tone blonde and black hair. Much the same can be said when someone mentions Princess Leia from Star Wars – you think about the big braided buns on either side of her head, right? How different would pop culture be today if Princess Leia had been played by Terri Nunn? Believe it or not, she almost was! Before The Metro or Take My Breath Away, Terri was an actress with bit parts in TJ Hooker, Lou Grant and Thank God It’s Friday – and almost won the role of Princess Leia! Check out this amazing footage of her actual audition for Star Wars alongside a baby faced Harrison Ford!

He has done some great solo work since then – most notably Kiss Me – a club classic! He is also the vocalist for The Lilac Time. But he did reunite with a Durannie a few years back when he released an electronic album under the name The Devils with Nick Rhodes. Check out this video of Stephen performing Kiss Me on the famed British music programme Top of the Pops!!

Strangeways Vault: A Certain Ratio – Reunited and Touring

Factory Records, best known as the home of Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays, has also featured some lesser known artists deserving of a second listen. One of those bands is A Certain Ratio. ACR was a post-punk band from England, signed to Factory in 1979. They toured in support of Joy Division, the Talking Heads and New Order, but never reached the same level of popularity (although they can be seen featured in the movie 24 Hour Party People). 30 years later ACR have reunited and started playing festivals and one off dates in the UK.
