South Florida brings us the dark/new wave band Astari Nite. Astari Nite has been around since 2007 and in that time, they have had the opportunity to warm up acts such as Assemblage 23, Modern English, Andy Rourke of The Smiths, Apoptygma Berzerk and Stars. That’s a pretty good resume for a band that hasn’t released their first album yet. Now, after a few singles and EPs, the band is preparing to release their first full length album in the spring of 2013. Waves was the first single off of the forthcoming album. The second single is Pyramids which the band has made available as a free download for you all in anticipation of the album. Pyramids has a nice hybrid sound to it – featuring 80′s new wave synth stylings with infectious melodies reminiscent of indie rock artists like White Lies.

WANT/ed, the electro-pop band from Koenigsberg, is the first band to offer a free download on Strangeways new Soundcloud page. The track is Never Will Take It Back and it will be a real treat for fans of dark synth, in the style of Depeche Mode or DE/Vision. The song is taken from an EP “Never Will Take It Back / Start To Live” which is available for purchase on Bandcamp. The EP features nine remixes of this song, along with a couple of other excellent tracks.

Brooklyn’s The Mystic Underground write pop songs for the disenchanted, disillusioned and disenfranchised. They are songs for the broken-hearted and desperate. Songs that celebrate life, love, death and everything in between.
Strangeways DJs and listeners have been fans of those songs including Remember Me and Evelyn, You’ll Be The Death Of Me. Their new dance floor banger, Fanfare For The Modern Man precedes their forthcoming EP Gender Rules.

The National are doing their best to keep us satisfied as we await the release of the new LP, Trouble Will Find Me. About a month ago, the band made the track Demons available through iTunes with pre-order of the new LP.
The last couple of weeks has seen a flurry of activity with an appearance on Jimmy Fallon, the announcement of new tour dates and a collaboration with Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson where they performed Sorrow for 6 straight hours.

Alison Moyet’s first album in six years, “The Minutes”, a collection of synthpop / electronic original songs was released this week. So far it has been receiving rave reviews from her fans and the media. Alison rose to fame in the 80s as the voice of Yazoo along with Depeche Mode’s Vince Clark before branching out into a solo career. The album almost didn’t happen as every label she approached wanted her to do a covers album (or appear on reality tv). Cooking Vinyl Records eventually signed her and recording began.

A couple of months ago, we blogged about Tricky offering a free download of Nothing’s Changed, the awesome first track from his forthcoming LP False Idols. He’s at again with a free download of a 2nd track. Tribal Dreams once again features the vocals of Francesca Belmonte and also an appearance from Tristan Cassell.
According to Fact Magazine, the new LP “puts aside the grab-bag approach that has characterised his work over the last decade. It’s his most focused record in yonks, honing in on particular sonic tropes (orchestration, bass) and a specific mood (threat).”

Depeche Mode has been very busy getting ready for their summer tour. Yesterday they appeared on the Kimmel show where they performed their singles Heaven and Soothe My Soul. The footage for those performances can be seen over at Slicing Up Eyeballs. Today, Live Nation has release an exclusive in-studio performance of the band performing Broken. In 2012, Gene frontman Martin Rossiter returned from an eight year hiatus since the last Gene album with his first solo album – The Defenestration of St Martin. The album was a more stripped down effort featuring a powerful vocal performance. This week, Martin followed up with a brand new live album called Live At The Unitarian Church. The album was recorded in 2011 during Martin’s first live performance as a solo artist. Standouts on the album are his first solo single Drop Anchor as well as classic Gene songs Olympian and Speak To Me Someone.

Wild Nothing, Jack Tatum’s one man dream pop project has announced a new EP and video for the track “A Dancing Shell”. The 7 song EP called Empty Estate is the follow up to Wild Nothing’s 2012 second full length release, Nocturne. It will be released on Captured Tracks/Bella Union on May 21st. The EP was inspired by Tatum’s struggles during the late 2012 Nocturne tour.

Former Stellastarr frontman Shawn Christensen shocked longtime fans this past year by writing, directing and starring in a brilliant short film called Curfew. Christensen’s character Richie is a suicidal drug addict forced to watch his estranged niece during an emergency. For his efforts, Christensen took home the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 85th Academy Awards.
One of the standout scenes in the film, featured his niece Sophia dancing to her favorite song in a bowling alley, the entire crowd at the alley joins in while Richie watches in a trance.
