Drive

Ever wish the movie Drive and its soundtrack were a Sega game…?

Holy Crap! Our inner geeks just exploded with happiness. Somebody with perhaps WAY too much time on their hands just put together this video, as if the film Drive was made into a Sega Genesis game circa 1994.

The iconic track, A Real Hero by College ft Electric Youth was made with an emulator for the Yamaha YM2612, the chip used to create the sound in the Sega Genesis. Meanwhile, the video shows the start menu for the supposed game in 9-bit colour, divvied up into 4 palettes of 15+alpha colours each.

Jobriath

Morrissey’s favorite singer, Glam artist Jobriath, documented in new film, Jobriath AD

Hailed as ‘The new Bowie’ in the 70′s, flamboyant Glam artist Jobriath was the first openly gay artists signed to major label. He was also one of the first celebrities to die of AIDS. For all of his potential and the media blitz behind him, Jobriath was a commercial failure.

Behind the push from manager Jerry Brandt, Jobriath was signed to Elektra Records for one of the largest contracts to date. The record was promoted with full page ads in Rolling Stone, Vogue and Penthouse. Jobriath was splashed all over New York City, with his image on 250 city buses and a Time Squre billboard. Admid the hype of his self-titled debut record, Brandt made claims of “Elvis, The Beatles and Jobriath”.

Despite the heavy promotion and positive critcal acclaim, the record failed to chart. Despite the success of artists like David Bowie, Lou Reed, Mark Bolan and Brian Eno, it seems the general population was not ready for the self-proclaimed ‘Rock’s truest fairy’. A 2nd record, Creatures of The Night, released in 1974 fared even worse. Jobriath retired from music in 1975, and died of AIDS in 1983.

CBGB

Hey Ho Let’s Go! Cast set for upcoming CBGB film

Writer/Director/Producer tandem Randall Miller and Jody Savin are bringing the story of CBGB to the big screen in 2013. CBGB follows the story of Hilly Kristal’s New York club from its origins as Country, Bluegrass and Blues (CBGB) to what it ultimately became: the birthplace of underground rock ‘n roll and punk. Kristal, a fan of Country and Bluegrass dreamed of having a club in the lower Eastside that catered to that kind of music, when he had difficulty booking those bands he turned to other kinds of rock music. Hilly had one demand of the acts he booked, they could only play their own original music. No top 40′s, no covers. It was the credo he lived by, support the artist at whatever the cost.

MTV: The Movie? Brett Ratner in talks to direct I Want My MTV

Bret Ratner, Director of feature films like Rush Hour (and its sequels), Red Dragon and The Tower Heist is finalizing details to helm the film adaptation of Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum’s book I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution. While Ratner, may at first glance seem like an odd choices, he is no stranger to music videos. He has directed music videos for the likes of LL Cool J, Wu-Tang Clan, P-Diddy, Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Courtney Love, Miley Cyrus and Cannibal Corpse. That’s right…we used Miley Cyrus in a sentence with Cannibal Corpse.

Remember the first time you saw Michael Jackson dance with zombies in “Thriller”? Diamond Dave karate kick with Van Halen in “Jump”? Tawny Kitaen turning cartwheels on a Jaguar to Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again”? The Beastie Boys spray beer in “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)”? Axl Rose step off the bus in “Welcome to the Jungle”?

It was a pretty radical idea-a channel for teenagers, showing nothing but music videos. It was such a radical idea that almost no one thought it would actually succeed, much less become a force in the worlds of music, television, film, fashion, sports, and even politics. But it did work. MTV became more than anyone had ever imagined.
