Is Moz really saying “I Know It’s Over?’
Could it be true? Is Morrissey finishing something he started? Is Shelia finally taking a bow? Could it be retirement time for This Charming Man? According to an interview reported by JuiceOnline.com, 2014 just may be the year Morrissey leaves the stage, retiring before he joins the ranks of aging performers still trying to rock and roll (are you hearing this Mick Jagger?).
In his statement he admitted;
“Yes. I am slightly shocked to have gone as far as I have. This is my 30th year, and I’ve aged a lot recently, which is bit distressing for me, as it must be for everyone. The body changes shape and there’s nothing you can do about it. Do I continue as a modern day Andy Williams? I take one hour at a time.”
Morrissey launched his career as the singer for The Smiths in 1982 – 30 years ago, leaving the band and continuing to a very successful career as a solo artist in 1988. 40 singles later (and 10 top 10 hits in the UK) he has been described by NME as “one of the most influential artists ever”. He has been touring the US and the UK for the last year, despite having expressed dismay at his lack of a record label. In recent posts in his blog he has reflected on the tour and referenced gratitude to his fans, but alluded to his sense of growing older. He posted “I apologize for having so many birthdays, but the impassioned crowd at San Diego justified the agony of another year gone. This crowd were noticeably bolder, loudly assured, and full of confidence. There was a vicious sensuality to the audience that I had never previously known. Yes, even after all these years.”
He may be planning to exit stage left, but it’s likely he will leave with a final act – NME has reported that the singer has completed a 660 page autobiography that is scheduled to be published in 2012. Will his book be the last we hear from Morrissey? According to him;
“We will all probably be blown up by the Syrian government soon, anyway, so it hardly matters in the great scheme of things [laughs].”
