Shoegaze Spotlight: Bloody Knives

Bloody Knives

Bloody Knives is an industrial shoegaze group from Austin, Texas, and consists of Preston Maddox (bass, voice, keyboards, samples, programming), Jake McCown (drums, noise, programming, art) and Jim Moon (sound manipulator). Describing their sound is not easy, but it falls somewhere in between heavy punk and industrial music, combined with blurred electronics, shoegaze atmospherics, and 8-bit glitch melodies. It’s been said that the band creates a wave of sound that is both in-your-face and completely out-there, with Maddox’s vocals sounding as if they are coming from another dimension, and this statement echoes how most of their fans feel – in fact, it’s precisely this element that initially draws their listeners in.

Bloody Knives began as a two piece – Preston Maddox and Jake McCown. While the two already had their horror-flick-soundtrack-meets-shoegaze-effects-pedals sound nailed down, they then added third member, Jim Moon, to give them extra layers of grit, noise and psychedelia. The addition of Moon rounded out the Knives unique sound perfectly, as well as added an incredible dimension to the band’s notoriously mind blowing live shows. It can truly be said that no one else sounds quite like Bloody Knives.

The band’s self titled debut LP and their self titled EP (2010) immediately caught the ears of gazers looking for something a little darker in their shoegaze. Word spread as fast as the internet would allow (and that’s pretty damn fast), and the group soon had quite an underground following. After releasing a split 7 inch with Me You Us Them and securing even more fans, the Knives have since gone on to release another EP, Disappear, a remix album, and another full length LP, entitled Blood – each one more well crafted than the next. During this time, they have been involved with several record labels: killredrocket records (Maddox’s own label), the now sadly defunt XD Records, and most recently, Saint Marie Records.
