It’s becoming pretty standard for bands to cover The Smiths these days. Some covers are completely unnecessary, and some are very memorable such as Dream Acadamy’s take on Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want from Ferris Beuler and Love Spit Love‘s version of How Soon Is Now. Continuing on with the tradition, American Laundromat Records has just put out a compilation (called Please Please Please: A Tribute To The Smiths) of 20 indie artists taking on their favorite song from The Smiths.
This album features contributions from several of Strangeways favorite artists. Trespassers William chimes in with a pleasantly toned down acoustic version of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. Anna-Lynne Williams from Trespassers William is no stranger to cover songs, as she has several EP’s of her own where she takes on her favorite artists. She has so many covers that she deserves her own Under The Covers segment.
Tanya Donelly teams up with Dylan In The Movies for an acoustic rendition of Shoplifters Of The World. This is very exciting for fans of Tanya who are aching for new material from her.
Additionally, there is a bonus 7″ featuring some songs not on the album, including Stars version of Asleep.
