Strange Culture: The Music Of John Hughes’ Films

Screenwriter, Director, Producer John Hughes has over 30 films to his credit and had his biggest success when branching out to the family-friendly, Home Alone in 1990. As of 2009, Home Alone was the highest grossing comedy of all time. However, this is not his legacy. Hughes is best-known and most beloved for his 1980′s teen output. Hughes seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the American Teen unlike any film maker before him. His ‘Brat Pack’ of actors in these films, and his use of pop music in them are lasting icons, forever emblazened in the hearts and minds of today’s 30-40 somethings.

Anna-Lynne Williams

Under The Covers: With Anna-Lynne Williams

With her honey-tinged tones, Anna-Lynne Williams is one of our favorite female vocalists. Over the years, she has released a bevy of material, collaborating with The Chemical Brothers (Hold Tight London) Au Revoir Borealis (The World Is Too Much With Us) and John Grant amongst others, 3 studio albums and 3 EPs with the Ethereal Indie band Trespassers William, Ormonde (with Robert Gomez) and a solo Folk project called Lotte Kestner.

Thankfully, there is a never a shortage of beautiful material coming out from Anna-Lynne, but even better is that fact that, like us, she has quite an affinity for cover songs.

My So Called Life

Strange Culture: The music of My So Called Life

In 1994, the TV show My So Called Life starring Claire Daines debuted and became an instant cult classic. The show tragically only lasted one year and it left millions of viewers wondering if Brian Krakow would ever be with his true love, Angela. As soon as it was announced that the show would not be renewed, MTV picked up the show and basically played it several times a week for a few years. This was an early example of something going viral before…ya know…things went viral. The show was so popular that a character who never appeared in a single episode became a household name…Tino.

One of the key ingredients to My So Called Life is its use of music. Several scenes are forever tied to the music that was used during the episode.

Oh Land

Danish Singer-Songwriter Oh Land releases new track Speak Out Now

Oh Land is the stage name of the Danish Singer-Songwriter Nanna Øland Fabricius who burst onto the scene last year with a pair of brilliant singles in White Nights and Sun Of A Gun. She was quickly embraced by Strangeways Radio DJs and listeners alike on the strength of those tracks but a couple of fortuitious touring engangements gave her a chance to sweep the US by storm.

Her new track, Speak Out Now, is available as a free DL for 24 hrs only. Grab it now…

Please Please Please - A Tribute To The Smiths

Under The Covers: Please Please Please tribute to The Smiths

It’s becoming pretty standard for bands to cover The Smiths these days. Some covers are completely unnecessary, and some are very memorable such as Dream Acadamy’s take on Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want from Ferris Beuler and Love Spit Love’s version of How Soon Is Now. Continuing on with the tradition, American Laundromat Records has just put out a compilation of 20 indie artists taking on their favorite song from The Smiths.

This album features contributions from several of Strangeways favorite artists.

Martin Gore - Man Made Machine

Martin Gore provides guest vocals on MOTOR’s Man Made Machine

Techno duo MOTOR is set to release their 4th album titled ‘Man Made Machine’. The first single, of the same name, features none other than Martin Gore on backing vocals. The track sounds a bit like a heavier version of Personal Jesus and it would certainly be welcome if Depeche Mode dabbled a bit in this direction on their next effort.

Martin Gore has been in the headlines quite a bit lately as his VCMG project with Vincent Clark just celebrated the release of their first EP featuring the song Spock.

Memoryhouse

Memoryhouse announces The Slideshow Effect, releases free download of The Kids Were Wrong

Toronto’s Memoryhouse has been teasing us for over a year now with their beautiful sonic soundscapes. Much like Still Corners did last year, Memoryhouse seems to creep up every couple of months of with a killer standalone track, taunting you to want that full length even more.

We first heard them last year with the Years EP, featuring brilliant tracks like Lately, To The Lighthouse, Sleep Patterns and The Waves. Just enough to hook you in and leave you wanting more. Then came their lovely cover of the My Bloody Valentine classic, When You Sleep, followed by the lovely single Caregiver and its equally lovely b-side Heirloom.

Computers Want Me Dead

Strangeways Artist Spotlight: Computers Want Me Dead

The New Zealand two piece band Computers Want Me Dead, consisting of Sam Harvey and Damien Daniels, has been taking the Strangeways airwaves by storm this last year. They like to call their sound retro-futuristic, and that label suits them well. Modern bands with a retro-sound are becoming very popular on our airwaves, and Computers Want Me Dead are at the forefront of this movement.

Their standout tracks ‘Letters And Numbers’ and ‘In The Blood’ have been featured on several of the Strangeways shows and has been selected several times by the listeners in their own listener submitted appreciate shows. Additionally, this has been a popular track for the Strangeways DJ’s to play in clubs and is usually accompanied by a line of people running up to the DJ booth and asking ‘What Was That?’…in a good way!

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Under The Covers: Trent Reznor takes on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Many of you, like us, are eagerly anticpating next week’s release of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The film is an American adaptation of the best selling trilogy of novels by Swedish author, Steig Larsson, which spawned 3 successful Swedish films. While much of the buzz revolves around whether Rooney Mara can match Noomi Rapace’s Lizbeth Salander, Trent Reznor is generating plenty of his own buzz.

Reznor will re-team with Atticus Ross and director David Fincher, the team behind the Oscar Winning soundtrack to The Social Network, for a 3-disc, 39 track score. Included on the Soundtrack are a couple of amazing covers. Reznor teams up with Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Frontwoman Karen O for a gripping cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song that serves as the opening credits to the film, and has been featured in the movie’s trailers and commercials. Disc 3′s final track and perhaps the closing credits to the film, features How To Destroy Angels (w/ Reznor’s wife Mariqueen Maandig on vocals) for a lovely rendition of Bryan Ferry’s Is Your Love Strong Enough?
