One of the marquee songs from The Verve (and of the Brit Pop era in general), Bitter Sweet Symphony, is a song with legal controversy. In 1997, it was determined that the song was based on the Rolling Stones song The Last Time. The Verve had originally received permission to sample the song but were sued by the Rolling Stones manager claiming that they used more of the song than was agreed upon. As a result, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were added to the songwriting credits for the song.
In a tweet this morning, The Verve front man Richard Ashcroft announced that Mick and Keith agreed to hand over their share of the song, and all subsequent royalties, to Richard Ashcroft.
